Objective: To verify Chinese character representation is whether foveal splitting or bilateral representation, by adopting cognitive neuropsychological approaches. Method: KY, a patient suffering from lesions in the left ventral mesial occipitotemporal area and splenium corporis callos: was asked to read Chinese characters presented tachistoscopically in the central foveal area or in the left/right half of the foveal area. Result: KY showed left hemiparalexia for characters presented in the central foveal area, characterized by substituting or omitting the left radicals of these characters. Left hemialexia happened when KY read characters in the left half fovea. Conclusion: Chinese character representation in foveal area is splitting, namely left radical of each character or characters in left half foveal area are just represented in right occipital cortex and right radical of each character or characters in right half foveal area are just represented in left occipital cortex. The results cannot be explained by bilateral projection theory. Author's address The First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, 210029 |
